Which patients are included in trust proportion of colonic resections with >12 lymph nodes reported in the 2018 Clinical Outcomes Publication?

All colon cancer patients aged 18 or over diagnosed between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017 who, according to NBOCA, underwent a major resection (regardless of surgical urgency or curative intent).

This indicator is calculated by dividing the number of colonic resections in which 12 or more lymph nodes were reported to have been examined by the total number of colonic resections according to the definition above. A very low proportion of resections is likely to be due to poor data submission by the unit, and we would encourage units where this is the case to review their data submission.

This is equivalent to multiplying the values of the following columns in Table 8.3 of the 2018 Annual Report:
“Proportion of colon cancer patients with recorded number of lymph nodes” and “Proportion of colon cancer patients with cases >=12 nodes reported”
